THE WESTERN PROVINCE

The Administrative capital, Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte, and the commercial capital, Colombo is in the Western Province. The Western Province is the most densely populated province of the country. The Western Province, consisting of Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara Districts are the most socio-economically developed areas in Sri Lanka. It contributes more than fifty percent to the GDP. The population of the Western province is 5.72 million and the total extent of the area is 3,709 sq.km.

The government has planned under the Megapolis program for the entire Western Province to be developed into a mega city by 2030, ensuring equal opportunity for every citizen. The development plan which will be carried out during a period of 15 years will come into operation under three phases at a cost of Rs. 40 billion. The launching ceremony of the Western Province Megapolis Development Plan was held under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena, on 29th January 2016, at the Independence Square.
